Bed Bugs Pest Control

Bed bugs belong to the insect family of Cimicidae and are small wingless insects which are fast crawlers. They are also known as “Red Coats” or “Chinches”.

  • Adult bed bugs are approximately 5 mm long. Before feeding they are a thin flattened oval shape and light reddish brown in colour. They become rounder and darker red after feeding.
  • Bed bugs are becoming a significant problem. They are easily spread and can be difficult to treat.
  • Bed bugs usually enter a property carried on clothing, luggage or furniture. The most common source of bed bugs is to stay at a hotel with an infestation. Bed bugs or their eggs get into clothing or suitcases and are then transported home. A bed bug infestation has nothing to do with cleanliness. They can be picked up even in the finest hotels and hitch a lift into the cleanest of homes.
  • Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and other mammals, but have not been shown to transmit any diseases. Bites may result in an itchy welt which can lead to secondary infection due to scratching.
  • Small droplets of blood on the sheets are an indication of the presence of bed bugs.
A bed bug completes its development from an egg to an adult in a little over one month. A single female can produce over 300 eggs in her lifetime. Bed bugs can survive almost a year without feeding.
  • Bed bugs are nocturnal insects and are lured from their hiding places at night by the warmth of our bodies and the carbon dioxide in our breath as we sleep. They are typically found in bedrooms and the living room, hiding in cracks and crevices during the day. The most common shelter for bed bugs are in the seams of mattresses, in crevices in the bed frame, behind the headboard and in electrical outlets.
  • An infestation is associated with dark or black staining of the mattress from bed bug excrement, along with an unpleasant odour.
